Street ‘N’ Strip Issue 19

The Word Of Pod

Santa Pod Raceway are pleased to announce the addition of no fewer than six brand new events to our already busy calendar, making for one jam-packed 2019 season here at the track!

The Springspeed Nationals on May 4th-5th is chronologically the first of the new line-up. The name is a fond tip of the hat to the recently closed Shakespeare County Raceway, as the Northamptonshire venue takes on the mantle of running a championship event over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend. The Springspeed Nats is supported by the Green Light Nationals on August 17th-18th, another National Sportsman Drag racing event, in the peak of summer.

Fast Show fans can rejoice at the addition of Fast Show Reloaded on June 30th. For vehicles of all shapes and sizes, the show offers another opportunity to get your car on the famed quarter mile or on display in the Autoglym Show & Shine competition. Something has also been added for almost all marque specific enthusiasts. The famous Griffin comes to Santa Pod in the form of The Vauxhall Show, welcoming everything from Corsas to Vivas to the strip and showground alike on April 28th.

German engineering takes over for Das Auto Show on June 2nd; we can’t wait to see which one of these marque heavyweights ends up on top of the pile at the end of the weekend. The third and final new marque specific show is for the ever-popular blue oval in the form of The Ford Show on July 7th; we’ve seen our fair share of Ford models on the strip in our 52 years of operating, and they are still popular today in the National championship ranks. What a year we have in store!

The early bird ticket offer is available until January 31st, 2019. Exclusions and terms & conditions apply; see website for full details.

Outlaw Street Round OS-6

VW Action, Santa Pod

August 31st-September 2nd, 2018

We returned for our ninth year as an invited class at VW Action, one of, if not the, most friendly and laid-back events on the 2018 Outlaw Street race calendar and a long-standing favourite with members.

We had a great turnout of members who travelled from the four corners of the county to race, bringing all manner of cars with which to chase down the fast VW crowd.

One of our favourite parts of VW Action, in addition to the day racing, is the chance to join in the night racing and entertain the crowds with a few excessive burnouts as well as pair up with some of the fastest VWs in the country. Some of these friendly grudge matches have been going on for years; some years the V8s win, sometimes a rapid Beetle pips the V8s to the finish line.

The event also provided one of the biggest shocks of the weekend and 2018 season… On Sunday afternoon, Outlaw Street was ‘summonsed’ by the VW Action crew to the main marquee. We were expecting a possible telling-off – “You noisy V8 lot”, that kind of thing – but instead we were presented with a trophy and inducted into the VW Action Hall of Fame, in recognition and thanks to all our years of supporting VWA and putting on evening displays for the crowds, which was met with a huge applause from all. For the first time ever, Outlaw Street members were both silent and very humbled.

The Fastest RT of OS-6, winning the Joe & Co sponsored trophy and prize money, was OS-74 Arnie Pamment in his ‘Crowd Plough’ Mustang with a 0.0676 reaction. Fastest V8 ET was OS-19 David Mahoney’s Camaro with a 9.144 at 147.18mph, and fastest six/four cylinder ET was OS-12 Barrie’s VW Golf with 11.642 at 116.4mph.
